End of an era for Shoprite, Pick n Pay, or SPAR in shopping malls in South Africa

South Africa’s shopping malls are preparing for the end of an era as Shoprite, Pick n Pay, and SPAR lose the ability to secure exclusive grocery retail space under long-term lease agreements.From January 2027, grocery retailers will no longer be allowed to enter into new exclusive lease agreements, while existing arrangements must be terminated by 31 December 2026.
