The family reportedly announced his death on Friday, October 23, 2026, through his verified Instagram page, while asking for prayers and understanding during the difficult period.

The family did not disclose the nature of the illness that led to the actor’s death.

The development marks a painful loss for the Nigerian film industry, where Duru established himself as one of the familiar faces of Nollywood through his acting career spanning several decades.

Born on July 27, 1969, Duru studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt and began building his career in the Nigerian entertainment industry in the late 1980s.

He became widely recognised for his role as Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s 1995 film Rattlesnake, which remains one of the notable productions associated with his career.

Over the years, he featured in numerous Nigerian films and earned recognition for his contributions to the movie industry. In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

Beyond acting, Duru was also involved in theatre, consultancy and other activities outside filmmaking.

Actor Previously Mourned the Loss of His Son

Duru’s reported death comes after the actor experienced a devastating family loss in August 2024, when his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, died.

Announcing his son’s death at the time, the actor described him as his “champ” and “lion”, expressing his grief and faith in God.

“My champ! My lion, you fought like a lion. If this is the way He wants it, so be it, I still judge you faithful,” he wrote in an emotional tribute.

He added that he would miss his son and would forever love him, even in death.

The loss drew widespread condolences from fans, colleagues and other members of the entertainment industry.

News of Duru’s reported death is expected to generate tributes from colleagues, fans and industry stakeholders who followed his career over the years.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria’s president, Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, has also been reported to have confirmed the development.

As of the reports reviewed, details of the actor’s funeral arrangements had not been announced.
