Nigeria’s gas reserves rise to 215.29trillion cubic feet

Nigeria’s gas reserves increased from 208.83 trillion cubic feet (TCF) in 2023 to 215.29 TCF in January 2026, while average gas production rose from 6.86 billion to about 7.5 billion cubic feet per day.

The Decade of Gas and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PI-CNG & EV) disclosed this at a media parley in Kano on Thursday.

The Decade of Gas Infrastructure and Demand Workstream Lead, Taofeek Balogun, said $3.5 billion had been committed to four major gas projects. He added that the OB3 Gas Pipeline was nearly completed, while the AKK Gas Pipeline was about 95 per cent complete.

He said ₦671 billion had been spent on infrastructure, attracting ₦1.6 trillion in private investment. The government is also targeting five million households for its liquefied petroleum gas programme by 2030.

PI-CNG & EV Chief Operating Officer Tosin Coker said 670 CNG buses had been deployed nationwide, with 285 operating commercially across 13 states. The programme had also recorded transport fare reductions of 15 to 50 per cent on some routes.

Coker added that plans were underway to establish 127 additional CNG refuelling stations across 31 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Kano was identified as a key clean-mobility hub in northern Nigeria, with seven operational stations and 17 more at various stages of completion.

He stressed the need for certified conversion centres, approved equipment and proper vehicle maintenance to ensure CNG safety.
