MP Babu Owino Speaks Out After Eastleigh Building Collapse

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has spoken out following the building collapse in Eastleigh, Nairobi, expressing concern for those affected while calling for an investigation into construction standards and the enforcement of building regulations.

In a statement shared on Friday afternoon, the legislator sent his thoughts and prayers to families caught up in the tragedy, particularly those whose relatives were reportedly trapped beneath the debris.

Owino expressed hope that rescue teams would reach anyone still trapped and that those injured would receive urgent medical attention.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the building collapse in Eastleigh,” he said, adding that the incident had raised serious questions about the safety of buildings in the capital.

The MP questioned how structures receive approval from relevant authorities and whether the required inspections are conducted before and during construction.

He argued that the incident should prompt the Nairobi County Government to explain the procedures used to approve buildings and establish whether existing regulations are being properly enforced.

Owino also called for an independent investigation into allegations of bribery and negligence in the approval process. He maintained that anyone found responsible should face accountability in accordance with the law.

His remarks place renewed attention on the role of county authorities and construction regulators in ensuring that buildings meet safety requirements and that resident are protected from preventable disasters.
