Media Trust Group launches converged digital newsroom
Media Trust Group, publisher of Daily Trust, has launched a converged digital newsroom that integrates its newspaper, television, radio and online operations to improve collaboration, speed up news delivery and expand its reach across platforms.
The newsroom, unveiled in Abuja on Thursday, brings together the editorial operations of Daily Trust, Weekend Trust, Aminiya, Teen Trust, Trust TV, Trust Radio and Digital Trust under a unified system supported by artificial intelligence (AI) tools and real-time audience analytics.
Group Editorial Director Ibrahim Shehu said the initiative would allow journalists and editors across the organisation to work together from the reporting stage, rather than operate as separate teams for different platforms.
âThis newsroom is one newsroom, many platforms,â he said at the launch.
Mr Shehu said the system would enable reporters to file stories from the field or from home, allowing newspaper editors, television producers, radio presenters and digital journalists to access the material simultaneously and prepare it for their respective audiences.
He said a single investigation could be developed into a newspaper report, a television documentary, a radio discussion, a podcast or a digital explainer, depending on how audiences prefer to consume the story.
âNot the same content repeated everywhere, but the same truth told in the form each audience prefers,â he said.
According to him, the newsroom’s AI-enabled content management system would improve coordination, support fact-checking and help editors monitor audience behaviour, including what people read, watch and listen to and where they access the content.
Mr Shehu said the technology would support journalists rather than replace them, adding that editorial judgement and responsibility for verification would remain with reporters and editors.
The system is also expected to strengthen collaboration between the organisation’s English- and Hausa-language teams, enabling them to develop stories together and make credible reporting accessible to audiences in both languages.
Media Trust chairman recalls company’s early struggles The Chairman of Media Trust Group’s Board of Directors, Kabiru Yusuf, recalled the company’s beginnings in Kaduna in 1998, when it was established. He said the company now has about 30 shareholders.
Mr Yusuf said the organisation faced significant difficulties in its early years, including operating with a small workforce. He noted that the first edition of its newspaper was produced before the company had recruited enough staff to handle all its editorial work.
Reflecting on the organisation’s development, he said Media Trust had been misunderstood over the years and recalled the challenges of building a newspaper business during military rule.
He said the company has been wrongly linked in the past to two former military leaders, Muhammadu Buhari (1983 to 1985) and Ibrahim Babangida (1985-1993). He said the link to Mr Buhari was because some of the founders of Daily Trust worked in their personal capacity as media consultants to the former head of state, while the link to Mr Babangida was because the former military ruler’s printing press in Kaduna had a commercial deal with Daily Trust to help print its papers.
Mr Yusuf also spoke about press freedom and the responsibility of journalists to report the truth, including when doing so could affect influential people or personal relationships.
He warned against allowing relationships with powerful individuals to interfere with journalism, stressing the need for fairness in reporting.
âFairness demands we should listen,â he said.
Group Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Shekarau said the converged newsroom was a strategic investment aimed at making the organisation more responsive to changing audience habits and technological developments.
âThe future of the media lies in our ability to understand and serve our audiences better,â he said.
Mr Shekarau said integrating the group’s platforms would improve access to its journalism and enable the organisation to respond more effectively to audience needs.
He added that the investment would create opportunities to deepen relationships with audiences and provide greater value to commercial partners through coordinated campaigns across print, broadcast and digital platforms.
The group said audience data would help editors understand how people engage with their content and use those insights to improve coverage, without allowing audience metrics to dictate editorial decisions.
The initiative forms part of Media Trust Group’s strategy to build a digitally driven media organisation as news consumption increasingly shifts towards online and mobile platforms.
