Nollywood Veteran Francis Duru Dies at 57 After Brief Illness

According to a report by The Cable on Friday, October 23, 2026, veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness, his family has announced.

The family disclosed the actor’s death in a statement shared on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.

In the announcement, the family expressed sadness over his passing and appealed for prayers and understanding from fans, friends and well-wishers.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the statement read.

“We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”

The family did not disclose the nature of the illness or provide further details about the circumstances surrounding his death.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) also confirmed the development, while tributes have begun to emerge following the loss of the veteran actor.

Duru’s death comes months after he dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that he was battling a life-threatening illness.

In June 2026, the actor addressed the rumours after a video showing him in a frail condition went viral, raising concerns among fans and colleagues about his health.

He described the footage as fabricated and malicious, insisting that the claims circulating online did not accurately reflect his condition.

The actor had also remained active in public discussions about the Nigerian film industry. In August 2026, he sparked debate after urging Igbo filmmakers to learn from how Yoruba filmmakers promote their culture and preserve their identity in Nollywood.

Francis Duru was born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, southeastern Nigeria.

He completed his primary and secondary education in Cameroon before relocating to Nigeria to pursue higher education.

He gained admission to the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he studied Theatre Arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.

His academic background and passion for performance helped lay the foundation for a career that would span several decades in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Duru began his acting career in 1989 when he featured in the movie Missing Mask, directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko.

Although the film marked his entry into Nollywood, he gained wider recognition in 1995 following his appearance in Rattlesnake, an action-comedy produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe.

He played Ahanna in the film, a role that helped establish his reputation as a talented actor and increased his visibility within the Nigerian movie industry.

Over the years, Duru featured in numerous productions, demonstrating his versatility across different genres and earning recognition for his performances.

Beyond acting, he contributed to the development of the entertainment industry and was appointed interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010.

He was also recognised for his contributions to society, receiving the United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007 in recognition of his positive influence on young people.

In 2020, Duru won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

Duru married his wife, Adokiye, in 2003, and the couple had four children together.

In August 2024, the actor and his family suffered the loss of their 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, a tragedy that attracted condolences from fans and colleagues across the entertainment industry.

In August 2026, Duru spoke about continuing with his professional and personal responsibilities despite the grief associated with losing his son. He explained that his work extended beyond acting to include theatre, consultancy and other commitments.
