Lagos MVAA To Launch Driver’s Licence Scheme In 2027, Promises 10-Minute Renewals

The Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA) has announced plans to introduce a new driver’s licence scheme in 2027 that will significantly reduce processing time and eliminate prolonged delays experienced by applicants.

The Permanent Secretary of MVAA, Rasheed Muri-Okunola, disclosed this during the annual media parley organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation at the Marriott Hotel, Ikeja GRA, on Thursday.

Muri-Okunola said the agency had signed professional agreements with consultants, ANCOR Advisory, who are currently working on the framework for the project ahead of its planned launch.

He explained that the new Lagos State Driver’s Licence Scheme would transform the current application process by making it faster, more convenient and technology-driven.

“By 2027, if you are renewing your driver’s licence, you should be able to receive it within 10 minutes. For a fresh application, the maximum processing time should be 30 minutes,” he said.

The MVAA Permanent Secretary acknowledged concerns raised by residents over delays in obtaining their driver’s licences, noting that some applicants had paid for their licences two, three or even four years ago without receiving them.

He assured that the new system would address such challenges by allowing applicants to complete most of the process remotely from the comfort of their homes, with only a visit to designated centres required for biometric enrolment before the licence is issued.

Muri-Okunola said the reform would replace the lengthy procedures associated with the current system, where applicants sometimes experience delays running into months or years.

As part of efforts to improve accessibility, he disclosed that the state government was expanding the number of driver’s licence capture centres across Lagos, with new facilities planned for areas including Badagry and Ojota.

According to him, the expansion would bring services closer to residents and enhance efficiency in the state’s motor vehicle administration system.
