Gakuya Breaks Silence, Draws Line As Babu’s Nairobi Gubernatorial Bid Takes A New Twist

The race for Nairobi governor in the 2027 General Election has intensified after Embakasi North MP James Gakuya declared that he would not abandon his ambition in favour of Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

Gakuya, who is seeking the seat on a Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ticket, maintained that he would pursue his gubernatorial ambitions even if he failed to secure the party’s nomination.

The three-term legislator indicated that he could run as an independent candidate rather than step aside for his political rival.

His declaration comes amid ongoing opposition negotiations aimed at building a united political front against President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 elections.

A recent meeting at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri brought together several opposition figures, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Babu Owino.

The meeting sparked speculation about possible political alliances and whether aspirants would be expected to compromise their individual ambitions.

Babu has reportedly been strengthening his relationships with influential opposition leaders as he positions himself for the Nairobi governorship.

Meanwhile, Gakuya is pursuing his own alliances to consolidate support among Nairobi’s diverse voting blocs.

His firm stance could complicate efforts to agree on a single opposition candidate, setting the stage for a potentially competitive battle for control of the capital in 2027.
