Fresh Details Emerge on Why Kalonzo Could Hold the Key to 2027 Presidential Race

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s political influence has come under fresh scrutiny as President William Ruto and the United Opposition prepare for the 2027 General Election.

In an opinion article published by People Daily on Friday, October 23, Parliamentary Service Commission Commissioner Johnson Muthama argued that political players should not overlook Kalonzo’s experience, networks and ability to negotiate alliances across different political camps.

Muthama traced Kalonzo’s political journey through the administrations of former Presidents Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki, as well as his partnership with the late opposition leader Raila Odinga.

He observed that Moi recognised Kalonzo’s ability to mobilise support and build relationships beyond traditional political strongholds. Kibaki later appointed him Vice President, while Raila selected him as his running mate in the 2007 and 2013 presidential elections.

According to Muthama, these political partnerships demonstrate why Kalonzo’s contribution to coalition-building deserves attention as competing factions position themselves for the next election.

The commissioner also disclosed that he previously held discussions with Raila in Nairobi, during which the late opposition leader reportedly reflected on his 2022 presidential defeat and expressed a desire to continue working with Kalonzo and Muthama.

Muthama further claimed that Raila wanted him back in his political camp ahead of 2027, likening his expected role to a striker wearing jersey number nine alongside Kalonzo.

With political realignments gaining momentum, the commissioner argued that both Ruto’s camp and the United Opposition must carefully consider the role Kalonzo could play in shaping alliances and bringing together different voter constituencies.

He maintained that political success depends not only on individual popularity but also on strategic partnerships, credibility and negotiations.

Muthama warned that dismissing Kalonzo’s political value could prove a costly miscalculation for any faction seeking to strengthen its position ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.
