Overcrowding a key concern at Polokwane Correctional Facility

POLOKWANE – Overcrowding and the management of high-risk inmates have emerged as key security concerns at the Polokwane Correctional Facility as the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) steps up oversight ahead of the festive season.

National commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale visited the facility on Sunday to assess its operational readiness, highlighting ongoing structural challenges facing one of Limpopo’s key correctional centres.

The inspection identified overcrowding as a persistent problem, placing pressure on security, resources and compliance with standard operating procedures.

The facility operates in a challenging security environment due to its mandate to accommodate high-risk inmates.

The department acknowledged that areas requiring improvement had been identified, including overcrowding, and said management remained committed to addressing them.

Thobakgale did not provide figures on the extent of overcrowding at the facility or a timeline for reducing it.

He stressed, however, the need for vigilance to ensure the safety of both inmates and staff.

“Every correctional official has a responsibility to uphold security, comply with approved procedures and remain professional at all times. As we enter the festive season, we must strengthen our vigilance, identify areas requiring improvement and work together to ensure that our facilities remain safe and secure,” he said.

The festive season is considered a high-risk period for correctional facilities nationally, with potential attempts to smuggle contraband, tensions among inmates and increased pressure on staff.

Overcrowding can intensify these challenges by placing additional strain on essential services, including kitchens, hospitals and remand detention sections.

These were among the units Thobakgale visited during his walkabout at the facility.

He also inspected inmate accommodation, interacted with inmates and engaged with learners undertaking practical training, urging them to take their training seriously.
