EFF Suffers Another Defection as Senior Member Joins ANC

A political setback has been experienced by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the southern region of KwaZulu-Natal. This loss occurred as a result of Lionel Dlamini, a long-serving councillor, apparently leaving the party and joining the African National Congress (ANC).

According to information that was supplied by the KZN Tonight Podcast, Dlamini, who had previously served as an EFF councillor in the Kokstad Local Municipality, was welcomed into the African National Congress (ANC) earlier today during a ceremony that was conducted by Bheki Mtolo, the provincial secretary of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal provincially.

This represents a change in the councillor’s political affiliation, as he had been involved with the EFF in the municipality for a considerable amount of time prior to his departure.

As political parties continue to manage shifting political allegiance and strengthen their presence in municipalities in preparation for the Local Government Elections in 2026, this move comes as a result of the ongoing process involved. Local government is a place where political parties strive to exert influence over the delivery of services, the management of municipalities, and the development of communities. Councillors and other political representatives play an essential role in this political arena.

According to Kokstad, where both parties operate within the larger political environment of KwaZulu-Natal, Dlamini’s choice to join the African National Congress (ANC) could garner attention in the region. On the other hand, it is not yet apparent what the full repercussions of his resignation will be for the EFF’s representation in the municipality.

The African National Congress (ANC) has made the decision to welcome Dlamini into its ranks, which also affords the party the opportunity to broaden its political network in the region. Despite this, there was no information that was immediately accessible concerning the reasons that led to his departure from the EFF, nor was it known whether he had provided a formal explanation of the circumstances that was surrounding his choice.

Furthermore, it is not apparent whether the action made by Dlamini will have any immediate impact on the makeup of the municipal council or the proportion of political representation in Kokstad where it is now balanced.

Changes in political parties that involve serving councillors can give rise to questions of loyalty to the party, the dynamics of the local political system, and the relationship between elected representatives and the communities they serve. However, the circumstances that surround each move are different, and it is not appropriate to presume that Dlamini is motivated by anything without first receiving a direct word from him.

Not only did the initial story of his move not include a comprehensive explanation from Dlamini, but it also did not include an official comment from the EFF.

As of right now, his alleged defection constitutes a significant shift in his political membership. The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed a councillor who had previously represented the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Kokstad.
