Another Goal Involvement for Mofokeng as Union Saint-Gilloise Run Riot in Europa League
Bafana Bafana star Relebohile Mofokeng continued his strong form in Europe by registering another goal contribution as Royale Union Saint-Gilloise thrashed Hapoel Be’er Sheva 4-0 in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.
The 21-year-old from Sharpeville started his third match in a row in the competition and played a key role in the comfortable victory. He set up Guilherme Smith for the second goal just after the hour mark before being substituted in the 79th minute. Raul Florucz had opened the scoring from the penalty spot late in the first half, while Dylan Aquino and Smith again added further goals as the Belgian side ran riot.
The match took place at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf, Germany, behind closed doors because of security concerns. Union Saint-Gilloise remained unbeaten in the Europa League group stage after the result and strengthened their position in the standings.
Mofokeng has settled quickly since joining Union Saint-Gilloise from Orlando Pirates in July 2026. The move was a record fee for a South African player leaving a local club, reported to be around R65 million. He had already scored on his Europa League debut against Viktoria Plzen earlier in the campaign and has been a regular starter under coach David Hubert.
Before his European move, the attacking midfielder or winger was one of the best players in the PSL. He helped Orlando Pirates win the league title and other domestic trophies and was named PSL Footballer of the Year. He has also been a regular for Bafana Bafana under coach Pitso Mosimane, showing the same creativity and goal threat at international level.
His latest assist adds to a growing list of contributions in Belgium and Europe. Fans back home continue to follow his progress closely as he adapts to the higher standard of the Belgian Pro League and continental football. For a player still only 21, the early signs at Union Saint-Gilloise suggest he has the ability to succeed in Europe and keep flying the South African flag.
The result gives Union Saint-Gilloise momentum heading into their next fixtures, including a league match against Cercle Brugge. For Mofokeng, another goal involvement is further proof that the step up from the PSL is suiting him well.
