Assistant Director II Receives GH₵4,200 Monthly, Yet Someone Receives Same In A Day Meeting – Obenfo
Obenfo Nana Kwasi Gyetuah, the National Executive Director of the Ghana National Council of Private Schools, has questioned the fairness of Ghana’s compensation system, highlighting the difference between teachers’ monthly earnings and payments made for attending meetings.
During an interview with Onua TV on September 28, 2026, Gyetuah noted that an Assistant Director II with the Ghana Education Service earns around GH₵4,200 per month, an amount that another person could reportedly receive for participating in a single meeting.
He said the disparity raises questions about public expenditure and could discourage workers who carry significant responsibilities. According to him, teachers’ salaries should adequately reflect their duties, which include preparing lessons, teaching, assessing students’ work and providing academic guidance.
Gyetuah further criticised the administration of outstanding salaries and allowances, alleging that some unpaid amounts lacked proper documentation. He warned that poor record-keeping could make it difficult for teachers to establish the amounts owed to them and secure their rightful payments.
The remarks come amid an ongoing strike by teacher unions over unpaid entitlements. Representatives of the unions held discussions with Ministry of Education officials on September 28, but the teachers insisted that their financial demands must be addressed before they resume work.
The dispute has intensified concerns about teachers’ welfare, payroll accountability and the impact of prolonged strikes on education. Continued disruptions could deprive students of essential classroom instruction, particularly those preparing for critical examinations.
Gyetuah has urged the authorities to improve payroll transparency, maintain reliable records, settle verified outstanding payments promptly and ensure that teachers receive compensation commensurate with their work.
