Woman Uses Her Grandmother’s Knowledge to Build a Business in KZN
Nokukhanya Dlamini, a woman from Ntshongweni in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal, is turning her knowledge of traditional plants into a growing entrepreneurial venture after launching her own brand, Dandelion Glow.
Having previously worked as a domestic worker, Dlamini started the business in early 2026, using dandelions growing in her backyard to produce handmade soaps, herbal teas and dandelion juice.
Her journey was inspired by her grandmother, Maria Magubane, who introduced her to traditional plant remedies and taught her about their uses. Drawing on this knowledge, Dlamini began experimenting with homemade products despite having no startup capital.
Through determination and creativity, she has gradually introduced her products to customers in her community and promoted her brand through social media platforms.
Dlamini hopes to transform Dandelion Glow into a larger enterprise, with plans to establish her own dandelion farm and expand production to reach a broader market.
However, building the business has not been without difficulties. Limited funding, a lack of suitable equipment, packaging expenses and the process of obtaining the necessary product certifications remain significant obstacles.
These challenges have made it difficult to increase production and position her products for wider commercial distribution.
Despite these setbacks, Dlamini continues working towards her vision of growing the brand into a sustainable business.
Her story highlights how traditional knowledge, resourcefulness and determination can provide a starting point for entrepreneurship, even when financial resources are limited.
