Today’s Headlines: 2027: Peter Obi Meets British Govt Officials;2 Die in Kano-Zaria Expressway Crash

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, met with British government officials and Nigerians in the diaspora during a visit to London ahead of the 2027 general election. The former Anambra State governor disclosed that the engagements focused on rebuilding Nigeria and tackling poor leadership, corruption and lack of accountability, which he identified as major obstacles to national development.

Obi explained that the meetings, held on Wednesday, October 21, brought together stakeholders committed to addressing Nigeria’s challenges. He expressed concern over widespread hardship and inadequate access to healthcare, education and employment. He stressed the need for a country where every citizen enjoyed equal opportunities, regardless of background or political connections, and where governance served the interests of all Nigerians rather than a privileged few.

Two people died in a road accident involving a bitumen-laden tipper truck and a Mercedes-Benz C180 at Dangi Underpass along the Kano-Zaria Expressway. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed that the crash occurred around 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday after the truck suffered brake failure, rolled backwards and collided with the car travelling behind it.

Four adult males were involved in the accident, with two dying at the scene. Emergency responders evacuated the victims to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital. Kano FRSC Sector Commander Idris Mohammed Lawal sympathised with the bereaved families and urged motorists and fleet operators to prioritise regular vehicle maintenance, particularly brakes and tyres, while observing safe driving practices to prevent similar tragedies.

The Chief Press Secretary to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, Kula Tersoo, dismissed threats from the Rainbow Coalition, insisting that the governor was not intimidated by efforts to frustrate his re-election in 2027. The coalition, linked to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, had been promoted by factional All Progressives Congress chairman Austin Agada, who threatened to defeat Alia politically.

Tersoo maintained that Alia enjoyed widespread grassroots support and remained committed to implementing reforms that improved residents’ welfare. He expressed confidence that workers, youths, traders and other beneficiaries of the administration would support the governor’s second-term ambition, despite political opposition and tensions with Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume.

A diplomat diagnosed with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in Abuja reportedly developed multi-organ failure, prompting the Federal Government and state authorities to intensify emergency measures against the disease. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the infection after multiple laboratory tests, while health officials traced contacts and strengthened surveillance to prevent further transmission.

The Federal Government placed 46 contacts on a 21-day no-fly list and introduced stricter airport screening measures. Anambra, Ogun, Niger and Yobe states also strengthened surveillance and emergency preparedness. Health Minister Muhammad Pate assured Nigerians that the imported case was being contained, urging vigilance without panic. Meanwhile, the National Assembly demanded stronger border screening, improved isolation facilities and adequate funding to prevent a wider outbreak.
