South African Drivers Get Fuel Price Relief of Up to R3 per Litre
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has announced a temporary cut to the general fuel levy to help motorists and transport businesses cope with record-high fuel prices. The state will reduce the levy by R3 per litre on diesel and R1.50 per litre on petrol, starting on 4 November.
The relief comes as pump prices have climbed to unusually high levels. The government points to unstable international oil markets and ongoing supply chain problems as the main causes. The full reduction will stay in place until the start of December. After that, the relief will be scaled back in steps before the levy returns to normal at the start of the new year. Treasury officials say the temporary loss in state revenue will put billions of rands back into the hands of households and businesses.
The decision has been welcomed by transport associations, labour federations and motoring organisations. They had warned that rising fuel costs could push up inflation on basic goods and public transport fares. Freight operators, farmers and daily commuters have been hit hardest by the repeated price increases, and many see the cut as a useful cushion ahead of the busy summer travel and holiday season.
Some financial analysts and opposition economists have welcomed the relief but cautioned that a levy cut needs careful handling. They say the state must manage its income properly to avoid larger deficits in the long run. National Treasury has said the shortfall will be covered through better revenue collection and tighter control of spending, so that its wider budget targets stay on track.
With the start date close, motorists and transport businesses are preparing for lower costs. Authorities have stressed that the measure is strictly temporary. They have urged businesses to use the period of cheaper fuel to improve how they operate, while keeping an eye on global crude oil trends.
