Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo makes strong comeback in NDC chairmanship race

Former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, has made a significant return to the spotlight in the party’s national chairmanship race after supporters picked nomination forms on his behalf ahead of the upcoming internal elections.

The development, reported on October 21, 2026, has renewed attention on the veteran politician’s possible return to the party’s top leadership position as the NDC prepares to elect new national executives.

According to reports, supporters drawn from all 16 regions of Ghana contributed funds to purchase and collect the nomination forms for Ofosu-Ampofo, demonstrating their interest in seeing him return to the chairmanship contest.

In a statement issued by his aide, Lawyer Abdul-Basit Adam, the former chairman’s camp acknowledged the gesture and expressed appreciation for the confidence and support shown by party members.

However, the statement did not confirm whether Ofosu-Ampofo would officially contest the position. His aide indicated that a decision on his participation would be communicated after his return to Ghana.

The development comes as the NDC’s internal electoral process gathers momentum, with several prominent party figures being linked to the contest to succeed current National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.

Ofosu-Ampofo is no stranger to the position, having served as NDC National Chairman after winning the party’s internal election in November 2018. He was later defeated by Asiedu Nketiah at the party’s national delegates congress in December 2022.

Throughout his political career, Ofosu-Ampofo has occupied several important positions, including National Organiser, National Vice Chairman and Member of Parliament for Fanteakwa. He has also served in government as a regional minister and Minister for Local Government and Rural Development.

His supporters believe his experience in party organisation and electoral mobilisation could be valuable as the NDC prepares for future political contests.

The party’s National Congress is scheduled for December 19, 2026, when new national executives are expected to be elected.

For now, the major question remains whether Ofosu-Ampofo will accept the nomination forms and formally enter the race. His decision could add another experienced contender to an increasingly competitive chairmanship contest.
