“My Life Is in Danger” Prof David Ndetei Fears for His Safety as Suspects in Wife’s Murder Seek Bail

Professor David Ndetei has told a Nairobi court that he fears for his life and the safety of his family, accusing Rose Mbithe of making threats against him as she and her children seek release on bail in the murder case involving Dr Victoria Mutiso.

Ndetei appeared in court on Wednesday, October 21, to defend an affidavit he had filed opposing the suspects’ release. Mbithe’s defence team had challenged the document, claiming it was forged and questioning the professor’s mental condition when it was prepared.

During cross examination, prosecutor JV Owiti asked Ndetei to confirm the contents of the affidavit.

The psychiatrist maintained that every paragraph was accurate and reflected his genuine concerns.

In the document, Ndetei stated that the accused persons knew his family members, relatives, in-laws, home, workplace and colleagues. He also claimed they were familiar with places he regularly visited.

The professor expressed concern that potential witnesses included people close to him, such as household members, domestic workers and friends.

He feared the accused could contact or influence these individuals through phone calls, messages or intermediaries.

Ndetei further told the court that releasing the suspects could expose witnesses to intimidation, bribery or other attempts to interfere with the case.

He insisted that his personal safety and that of his family could also be at risk.

When asked to explain the source of his fears, Ndetei pointed to alleged threats he claimed Mbithe had made against him.

He testified that she had threatened to take away everything he owned, target his family and reduce him to someone living on the streets.

Mbithe reportedly appeared unsettled during the hearing, occasionally flinching and speaking quietly with her son, who was seated nearby.

Ndetei also acknowledged concerns about his son’s behaviour but spoke positively about his daughter, describing her as an outstanding teacher who had ranked second nationally.

The case surrounding Dr Mutiso’s death remains before the court. The judge is yet to determine the bail application, leaving the accused persons’ immediate future uncertain as the proceedings continue.
