Man believed to be a foreign national chased and beaten with sticks in a CBD

A social media user has accused South Africans of viewing foreigners as “baboons” following a video showing a man believed to be a foreign national being chased and beaten with sticks by South African men in a CBD amid ongoing anti-illegal immigration marches. The footage shows the man running from the group before falling to the ground as several people continue striking him, while others appear to try to intervene. However, the man’s identity, immigration status and the circumstances that led to the confrontation have not been established.

The post is silent on what happened before the chase, since the clip does not show why the man was being pursued or what was said to him. The post also does not say where the CBD is located or when the footage was recorded. Those details matter because they would establish the context of the attack. Without them, the clip shows only the chase and the beating, and the man’s identity, immigration status and the circumstances that led to the confrontation have not been established.

Others pushed back against the framing, saying reports focusing exclusively on attacks against foreign nationals can overlook public concerns about crimes allegedly committed by some immigrants. Critics of such coverage argue that the wider disagreement over how South Africa’s immigration concerns are reported internationally needs to account for those concerns, while others said nothing could justify mob violence or taking the law into one’s own hands.

The available information does not resolve what happened before the beating or whether anyone has been arrested over the attack. Establishing what happened before the beating would provide important context, although it would not justify mob violence or taking the law into one’s own hands. The public is waiting for more information, because the clip has highlighted the hostility foreigners face without any confirmation of what led to the attack.
