Kaizer Chiefs Dressing Room Drama: Fernando Da Cruz Breaks Silence On Viral Player Clash

Da Cruz Breaks Silence on Frosler and Leaner Clash as Chiefs Dressing-Room Incident Sparks Debate

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has played down the reported confrontation between Reeve Frosler and Renaldo Leaner following Amakhosi’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Red Arrows in the CAF Confederation Cup, insisting that there was no issue requiring his intervention.

The incident attracted attention after footage circulated on social media showing the two players exchanging words following the final whistle in Zambia. The video sparked debate among supporters, with some questioning the atmosphere within the Chiefs dressing room during a challenging period for the Soweto giants.

However, Da Cruz has moved to calm speculation, suggesting that emotions can naturally run high after a competitive football match and that the situation did not warrant a formal discussion with his players.

“We just make a sport with emotions and sometimes after games, the emotions are very high. I didn’t need to speak to the players because there was no issue and that’s all,” Da Cruz explained.

The French tactician’s comments offer reassurance that he does not consider the exchange between Frosler and Leaner a serious internal problem. Although the footage generated considerable discussion, the coach has made it clear that his attention remains on the team’s performances rather than speculation surrounding the incident.

Chiefs travelled to Zambia hoping to secure a positive result in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary-round tie. Instead, they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Red Arrows at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, leaving themselves with work to do in the return fixture.

A set-piece goal in the 76th minute proved decisive, handing the Zambian side an advantage ahead of the second leg. The result also increased the pressure on Da Cruz, whose team have struggled to turn promising performances into consistent victories.

The coach previously acknowledged that his side lacked aggression and intensity during the first half against Red Arrows. Although he felt the team improved after the interval, Chiefs failed to create enough clear scoring opportunities to avoid defeat.

Amakhosi must now respond with a stronger attacking display as they attempt to keep their continental ambitions alive.

The return leg is scheduled for Friday, 23 October, at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Chiefs will need to overturn the deficit, making the encounter an important test of their character, tactical discipline and ability to handle pressure.

For Da Cruz, restoring confidence and maintaining unity within the squad will be essential as the club approaches a decisive stage of its campaign.

While the exchange between Frosler and Leaner has generated headlines, the coach’s response suggests that he wants the focus firmly back on football.

Chiefs supporters will now hope their players can put the controversy behind them and deliver the performance required to progress in the CAF Confederation Cup.
