Inside The Richest People From Ukambani And The Businesses They Own

Ukambani, comprising Machakos, Kitui and Makueni counties, has produced several prominent politicians and businesspeople who have built substantial wealth through investments in different sectors. From real estate and transport to corporate enterprises, some individuals with roots in the region have established themselves as influential figures in Kenya’s economic and political landscape.

Among the notable personalities associated with Ukambani are former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and businessman Harun Mwau, whose careers have involved both entrepreneurship and public service.

Mike Sonko, whose real name is Gideon Mbuvi Kioko, hails from Machakos County and became a household name through his political career and flamboyant lifestyle. He previously served as the senator of Nairobi County before becoming its governor.

Sonko reportedly began building his wealth through real estate investments in Mombasa during the early 2000s. His involvement in buying and selling land provided him with a foundation to pursue other business ventures.

After relocating to Nairobi, he ventured into the matatu industry, purchasing approximately 10 public service vehicles that operated along the Buruburu–town route. The transport business became another source of income before he entered politics.

Sonko was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Makadara Constituency, marking the beginning of his rise in national politics. His public profile has also been shaped by his expensive jewellery, luxury vehicles and highly publicised charitable activities.

Another prominent figure associated with Ukambani is Harun Mwau, a businessman and former politician who represented Kilome Constituency in Parliament.

Mwau also served as the first director of the now-defunct Kenya Anti-Corruption Authority. However, his tenure lasted about a year before a tribunal removed him from office following questions about his suitability for the position.

In business, Mwau has been associated with several companies, including Harun International Limited, Sheltown Limited, Mwundo Limited and Vitu Limited. His business interests have contributed to his reputation as an established entrepreneur.

Mwau has also attracted international attention over allegations of drug trafficking, including being flagged by United States authorities. Such allegations should be distinguished from proven criminal conduct.

The business journeys of Sonko and Mwau illustrate how entrepreneurship and political involvement have shaped the public profiles of prominent individuals linked to Ukambani. Their investments and careers reflect the diverse paths through which Kenyans have pursued wealth and influence.
