I Will Only Go Back to NPP If They Call Me to Lead Them in 2028 Elections: Alan Kyerematen

According to a report by Kessben TV on October 22, 2026, former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has stated that he would consider returning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) only if he is invited to lead the party as its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

The statement has renewed attention on Ghana’s political landscape as parties position themselves for the next presidential election. Kyerematen, who is now the founder and leader of the United Party, made his position known during an interview with DW Africa, where he discussed the possibility of returning to his former political home.

His comments suggest that he is not interested in returning to the NPP merely as an ordinary member or under arrangements that would leave him without the opportunity to lead the party into the next election.

Kyerematen left the NPP in September 2023 after withdrawing from its presidential flagbearer race. At the time, he raised concerns about what he described as unfair treatment during the party’s internal electoral process. He subsequently contested the 2024 general elections as an independent candidate under the Movement for Change before establishing the United Party.

During the recent interview, Kyerematen argued that the political direction he represents could offer the NPP a better chance of winning power in 2028. He maintained that the values associated with his current political movement provide an alternative approach that could appeal to voters.

The former minister also expressed doubts about the ability of both the NPP and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to guarantee Ghana’s long-term prosperity. His position reflects his broader argument that the country needs a different political approach to address persistent development challenges.

However, his condition for returning to the NPP raises questions about whether such an arrangement would be acceptable to the party’s current leadership and supporters. The NPP has already selected Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections, making Kyerematen’s proposal a significant political question rather than a straightforward reunion.

For the NPP, any consideration of bringing back the former presidential aspirant would involve difficult questions about party unity, leadership and the existing presidential campaign.

Kyerematen’s remarks also place the United Party’s future at the centre of the discussion. Although he has indicated the circumstances under which he might return to the NPP, he has continued to defend the political values of his current party.

Whether the NPP would consider his proposal remains uncertain. For now, his statement makes one thing clear: any potential return would depend on the leadership opportunity he has outlined, while the political contest ahead of the 2028 elections continues to take shape.
