I Will Return To NPP Only If Invited As 2028 Flagbearer– Alan Kyerematen

According to a report by Kessben TV on Thursday October 22, 2026, Founder and leader of the United Party (UP), Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, has declared that he would consider returning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) only if the party invites him to lead it as its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.

The former Minister of Trade and Industry made the position known in an interview with DW Africa, where he discussed the NPP’s political future and the possibility of reuniting with the party he left in 2023.

Kyerematen’s comments suggest that any potential return to the NPP would depend on the leadership role he is offered, rather than simply rejoining the party as an ordinary member.

He indicated that he would need to have control of the party and the opportunity to implement the political principles he believes are necessary for electoral success.

Responding to whether he would accept an invitation to return as the NPP’s flagbearer, Kyerematen said: “Yes, if as a flagbearer, okay, I’m controlling the party, then I know it is the only way that they can win power.”

His statement comes against the background of his long-standing relationship with the NPP and his eventual decision to break away from the party following disagreements over its internal processes.

Kyerematen left the NPP in 2023 after raising concerns about what he described as unfair treatment during his participation in the party’s presidential selection process.

He subsequently contested the 2024 general elections as an independent candidate under the Movement for Change before establishing the United Party.

Despite his departure, the former presidential aspirant has continued to comment on Ghana’s political direction, advocating an alternative approach to governance and the country’s development.

During the DW Africa interview, Kyerematen maintained that the values underpinning his new political movement could offer a path towards winning the 2028 elections.

He argued that the NPP would need to embrace those principles if it hoped to regain political power.

“I have made a public declaration that I’m so committed to the values of the United Party. In fact, that is the only way they \[NPP\] can win the 2028 general election,” he stated.

Kyerematen also expressed doubts about the ability of the two dominant political parties, the NPP and the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), to guarantee Ghana a prosperous future, insisting that the country needs a different political approach.

His remarks add another dimension to discussions about political alliances, party unity and the possible realignment of political forces ahead of the 2028 elections.

For now, Kyerematen remains the leader of the United Party, and his comments indicate that a return to the NPP would be conditional on an invitation to lead the party as its flagbearer.

The statement is likely to fuel further debate over whether the NPP could consider bringing back its former leading member and what such a move would mean for the party’s leadership and electoral strategy.
