He was constantly insulted for eight years without such arrests- Azure reacts to Bawumia’s release

Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has weighed in on Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s request for authorities to end the prosecution of an NDC organiser, saying the former Vice President’s position is supported by his record in public office.

Manasseh argued that Bawumia faced persistent criticism and insults throughout his eight years as Vice President but did not respond by ordering arrests or initiating prosecutions against those who attacked him verbally.

He maintained that this history gives credibility to Bawumia’s call for the case to be discontinued.

The journalist, however, made it clear that his comments do not mean he approves of insults or abusive language in political debate. He reiterated that he does not endorse such conduct.

Bawumia had appealed to the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to bring the prosecution against the NDC organiser to an end.

His position has attracted considerable public interest, with some observers arguing that it demonstrates respect for freedom of speech and the role it plays in Ghana’s democracy.

The issue has prompted further discussion about how political leaders and public institutions should protect freedom of expression while encouraging respectful engagement in the country’s political environment.
