GFA prioritising Black Stars over domestic football – Nii Lante Vanderpuye

Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has accused the Ghana Football Association (GFA) of placing too much emphasis on the Black Stars at the expense of domestic football development.

Speaking on Akoma FM, Vanderpuye questioned the priorities of the current football administration, arguing that its focus on the senior national team was undermining the growth of local clubs.

“The current football association is the Ghana Black Stars association and not the Ghana Football Association,” he said.

Vanderpuye also warned that the current state of domestic football could make it increasingly difficult for traditional rivals Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak to win the Ghana Premier League in the coming years.

“The current football system is affecting clubs like Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak. If we fail to address these issues, there is no way these two clubs will win the league in the next five years,” he added.

His comments come amid renewed debate over the GFA’s priorities and calls for greater investment in domestic football, including the development of clubs and the wider football structure.

Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak are two of Ghana’s most successful and widely supported clubs, with a rich history of competing for major domestic honours.

However, Vanderpuye believes the current system is working against their ability to challenge for the league title, raising questions about the balance between supporting the Black Stars and strengthening club football.
