Gakuya Breaks Silence Hours After Babu Owino’s Revelation, Declares He Will Not Quit Governorship
Democratic Congress Party (DCP) gubernatorial aspirant James Gakuya has broken his silence over the Nairobi governor’s race, declaring that he will not withdraw from the contest ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gakuya maintained that he was determined to pursue his gubernatorial ambitions, challenging his competitors to face him at the ballot rather than expect him to abandon the race.
“I cannot withdraw from the Nairobi gubernatorial race. Let us meet at the ballot,” Gakuya declared.
His remarks come hours after Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino publicly addressed claims that DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua had asked him to abandon his Nairobi gubernatorial ambitions in favour of Gakuya and instead contest the Nairobi senatorial seat.
The development has brought renewed attention to the political competition surrounding the Nairobi governor’s seat, with different aspirants positioning themselves ahead of the next general election.
Gakuya, who is seeking the seat on the DCP ticket, appears determined to maintain his position despite the reported discussions involving other political players.
His statement also raises questions about whether opposition leaders will reach an agreement on a common candidate for Nairobi or allow aspirants to compete through party nominations and, potentially, the general election.
Babu Owino, who has also expressed interest in the Nairobi gubernatorial contest, remains a significant figure in the emerging political discussions. The reported proposal that he should consider the senatorial seat has added another dimension to the debate over how opposition politicians will divide or compete for elective positions in the capital.
However, Gakuya’s declaration suggests that he is not prepared to surrender his ambitions simply because of negotiations or proposals involving other leaders.
Nairobi’s gubernatorial contest is expected to attract considerable political attention as aspirants seek to build support among residents and establish their positions ahead of the 2027 elections.
The latest exchange also presents a challenge for leaders seeking political unity, as they navigate competing ambitions among individuals interested in the same seat.
Whether the aspirants eventually reach a political understanding or proceed independently remains to be seen.
For now, Gakuya has made his position clear: he intends to remain in the Nairobi governor’s race and is ready to face his competitors at the ballot.
The final decision will ultimately rest with Nairobi voters when they elect their next governor in the 2027 General Election.
