ECG Warns Customers Ahead Of Nationwide Meter Audit, Reveals How To Verify Staff

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a nationwide meter audit and outlined steps customers can take to verify field personnel before allowing them onto their properties.

The exercise, announced on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, will cover all ECG operational areas. According to the company, the initiative is intended to reduce commercial losses, improve revenue assurance and combat electricity theft.

During the audit, ECG personnel will inspect and verify prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff installations and associated wiring. The company said the checks are aimed at confirming the integrity of metering systems and ensuring electricity consumption is measured and billed accurately.

ECG has also clarified that its public announcement serves as official notice of the exercise. Customers should therefore not expect separate appointment letters or advance notifications before authorised personnel visit their premises.

The company advised customers, landlords, estate managers, property managers, facility managers and security personnel not to deny or delay access solely because they have not received an individual notification.

However, ECG has urged the public to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be part of the exercise before granting access.

Customers can confirm the identity of field personnel through the ECG Customer Call Centre on 0302 611 611 or by using the company’s *226# USSD service, which is available across mobile networks.

To use the USSD option, customers should dial *226# on their mobile phones and select Option 5, labelled “Verify Staff”. They must then enter the six-digit verification code provided by the staff member.

The system will display the worker’s full name, region and district. Customers should check that the details correspond with the person who is physically present at their premises before proceeding.

ECG said all employees and authorised agents participating in the audit would carry official identification cards.

The company also referred customers to Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413). The provision requires consumers to grant public utility employees or agents safe and reasonable access to their premises to read meters or inspect utility equipment, provided they produce a verifiable identity card.

Customers are therefore encouraged to cooperate with legitimate audit teams while using the available verification channels to confirm their identities.
