Dangote’s KSh2.2 Trillion Refinery Gets Major Boost as 154 Machines Arrive
The KSh2.2 trillion Dangote refinery project in Lamu has gained fresh momentum after a ship delivered 154 heavy machines weighing more than 8,200 tonnes. The arrival at Lamu Port comes weeks after President William Ruto and Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote launched the project, which is expected to transform fuel supply and create thousands of jobs.
The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) confirmed that the vessel MV Great Prosperity completed unloading the equipment on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
According to the authority, the shipment contained 154 units of specialised machinery weighing a total of 8,213 metric tonnes. The equipment includes articulated dump trucks and other machines needed for major construction work.
Images from the port showed cranes, excavators, road rollers, motor graders and heavy-duty trucks bearing Dangote branding. The machinery is expected to support construction activities at the planned refinery site.
KPA said more shipments of construction equipment are expected to arrive through Lamu Port in the coming months as preparations for the project continue.
The latest delivery follows an earlier shipment of about 2,930 tonnes of construction equipment that arrived at the port in September, shortly before the refinery’s groundbreaking ceremony.
The project was officially launched on September 30, 2026, by President Ruto and Dangote, the founder of Dangote Group.
The refinery is designed to process up to 700,000 barrels of crude oil daily once completed. It is expected to produce petroleum products for Kenya and neighbouring countries, including Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
The government has projected that the project will create more than 60,000 direct and indirect jobs, although the actual employment impact will depend on how construction and operations progress.
Beyond the refinery itself, KPA expects increased cargo movement to strengthen Lamu Port’s role as a regional transport and energy hub. The development could also support the wider Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) corridor.
However, the project has faced concerns from some local residents over land compensation, an issue that has attracted government attention.
With more machinery expected to arrive, Lamu is preparing for a major industrial development that could reshape Kenya’s energy sector and strengthen regional trade.
