Bawumia Meets Three Health Associations Over Recruitment, Regulation and Working Conditions

According to a report by 3News published on October 22, 2026, New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has engaged the leadership of three professional associations in Ghana’s health sector as part of his ongoing consultations to understand challenges facing various professions and develop policies to address their concerns.

The meeting brought together representatives of the Ghana Health Information Management Association (GHIMA), the Ghana Association of Community Mental Health Officers and the Nutrition and Dietetics Association of Ghana.

Discussions focused on professional recognition, legislation, recruitment, regulation and improvements in working conditions for members of the three associations.

The engagement provided an opportunity for the professional bodies to present their concerns and share ideas on how their respective fields could be strengthened to improve service delivery.

For the Ghana Health Information Management Association, professional recognition and regulation are important issues because health information professionals play a crucial role in managing patient records, maintaining data quality and providing information that supports healthcare planning and decision-making.

Reliable health information helps healthcare facilities monitor patient outcomes, allocate resources effectively and evaluate the impact of government health programmes.

Meanwhile, community mental health officers contribute to mental healthcare delivery, particularly at the community level. Strengthening their professional recognition, recruitment and working conditions could help improve access to mental health services.

The Nutrition and Dietetics Association of Ghana also represents professionals whose work contributes to nutritional assessment, dietary management and the prevention and management of nutrition-related health conditions.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia described the consultations as an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the concerns affecting different professional groups. Following the meeting, he expressed gratitude to the three organisations for sharing their knowledge and perspectives.

The engagement forms part of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s broader stakeholder consultation exercise, through which he has been meeting professional associations and industry representatives to discuss challenges in their respective sectors.

Earlier, he also met the Association of Garment and Apparel Manufacturers to discuss difficulties facing Ghana’s garment industry and explore ways to improve its international competitiveness.

Although the latest meeting provided a platform for discussing the concerns of the three health-related associations, the report did not announce specific policy commitments arising from the engagement.

The discussions nevertheless highlight the importance of consulting professional bodies when developing policies intended to improve working conditions, strengthen professional standards and enhance public service delivery.
