Bawumia Leads NPP Heavyweights to Nsawam Prison as Party Stands Behind Jailed Chairman Wontumi
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the upcoming general election, has led a delegation of senior party members to visit the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.
The delegation included several prominent NPP figures, among them former National Chairman Freddie Blay, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Effiduase Asokore MP Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, and other Minority Members of Parliament and party officials.
The visit follows Chairman Wontumi’s reported 20-year prison sentence handed down by the High Court in connection with the Samreboi illegal mining case. The judgment has generated widespread political debate, attracting reactions from party supporters, critics and other members of the public.
Following the ruling, the NPP leadership expressed concern about the conviction, stating that the party was examining the court’s decision and considering available legal options, including the possibility of filing an appeal.
Dr Bawumia’s decision to visit the incarcerated regional chairman, alongside other senior party officials, has been viewed by many as a significant demonstration of solidarity with one of the NPP’s influential figures. Chairman Wontumi has played a prominent role in strengthening the party’s political structures, particularly in the Ashanti Region, which remains an important stronghold for the NPP.
Some of his supporters have questioned the severity of the sentence, arguing that the punishment is excessive. Others, however, insist that the case should be handled strictly through the judicial process, without political pressure or interference.
The visit has further highlighted the political significance of Chairman Wontumi’s conviction and its potential implications for the NPP. As the party considers its next steps, the legal proceedings remain a major subject of national discussion, with the leadership demonstrating continued support for the embattled regional chairman.
