Africa CDC Confirms Nigeria’s Ebola Patient is Ugandan-Born

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has revealed that the index patient diagnosed with the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in Nigeria is a Ugandan-born individual who arrived in the Federal Capital Territory alongside her husband on October 3, 2026.

Dr. Jean Kaseya, the Director General of Africa CDC, made this announcement during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. He emphasized that while regional agencies are collaborating closely with authorities in Nigeria, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to contain the spread, full transparency from the patient remains vital. Dr. Kaseya pointed out that the individual needs to provide precise travel and contact histories—such as whether she visited the DRC or interacted with anyone coming from there—to help prevent any diplomatic friction or crisis between African nations.

Addressing public apprehension, Dr. Kaseya assured citizens that the continent is not in a panic mode and remains well-equipped to tackle health emergencies. However, he noted that vaccines for the Bundibugyo strain are still undergoing clinical development, highlighting an ongoing disparity in global health support.

Domestically, the Federal Government confirmed the Ebola case earlier in the week, stating that the patient’s symptoms appeared four days after her arrival from Uganda. In response, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, announced that the patient has been safely isolated and receiving medical care, while robust contact tracing has identified 44 immediate contacts. Additionally, the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has directed the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to enforce a mandatory 21-day no-fly restriction for 46 identified
