The Flagbearership Is Not a Throne — Reaction as Alan Kyerematen Sets Condition for NPP Return

A political commentator has pushed back sharply at Alan Kyerematen over his reported claim that he would return to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) only if the party calls him back as its flagbearer. In a pointed Facebook post, the commentator, writing under the name Nation Watch, dismissed the condition as an expression of entitlement rather than a serious political proposition, asking: “Alan, are you serious?”

The post argued that the NPP flagbearership is not a throne, not a matter of succession, and not a question of “my turn.” It stressed that the position is decided by delegates through votes under the party’s own laws, and challenged Kyerematen to produce any document in which the party promised him the flag. “Did the party sign any paper promising it to you? Show us!” the commentary demanded.

The commentator also rejected any suggestion that Kyerematen was forced out of the party. According to the post, he walked out on his own when the delegates’ decision did not go his way, and he is now setting conditions for a return to a house he left voluntarily. “Who sets conditions for a house he left himself?” the post asked.

Turning to electoral record, the commentary advised Kyerematen to focus on learning to win votes. It claimed that when he stood outside the party, he could not even match the votes of a single NPP Member of Parliament, citing Ahmed Shaib of Weija as an example. “If you cannot beat an MP, how do you expect a whole party to hand you its flag?” the post asked, insisting that politics is about votes, not entitlement.

The post concluded that while the party’s door is not locked, nobody will beg Kyerematen to return “with a crown.” It ended with a blunt admonition: “Alan, go and sit down. The delegates have spoken.” The remarks add to the intensifying debate over Kyerematen’s political future and his relationship with the party he once sought to lead.
