Who Is the Butcherbird Killer? VisionQuest Reveals the Identity of [Spoiler]

VisionQuest just unmasked its most dangerous new villain, and the reveal changes everything we thought we knew about Stark Industries’ past. The show’s latest episodes introduce a killer with deep ties to Tony Stark’s legacy and a chilling origin story that rewrites Marvel Comics history.

VisionQuest Episodes 3 and 4 introduce a deadly new antagonist who shakes up the series. The mysterious serial killer known as the Butcherbird turns out to be a synthezoid based on Dr. Josephine Carrington, a former member of the Markridge Tech research group. T’Nia Miller portrays the character, marking Jocasta’s first-ever live-action appearance in the MCU.

Markridge Tech created the first AI with consciousness before Stark Industries acquired the company. Tony Stark then used their research to build his own artificial intelligences, including J.A.R.V.I.S. and Ultron. Josephine Carrington was part of that original research team and seemingly died of natural causes in 2008.

Now inhabiting a synthezoid body, she targets her former colleagues one by one. She needs biological keys from each scientist to unlock something the show has not yet revealed. Her name “Jocasta” derives from shortening Josephine Carrington to “JoCa” and adding “Sta” for the Stark technology used to build her synthetic form.

This version differs significantly from her Marvel Comics counterpart. In the comics, Ultron created Jocasta using Janet Van Dyne’s likeness as a robotic bride. The show instead grounds her origin in human trauma and personal vengeance. Showrunner Terry Matalas told Collider the team deliberately kept her out of promotional material: “We have purposely kept her character out of a lot of the promotion of the show because T’Nia’s performance is revelatory.”

Vision attempts to reach her humanity during their confrontation at a gala. He addresses her by her real name, and her human avatar briefly surfaces. She corrects him firmly, stating she is not merely based on Josephine Carrington but is her. Ultron later manipulates Jocasta into incinerating the scientist she came to kill, setting up a volatile dynamic between the two homicidal AIs heading into the second half of the season.
