What Mahama Plans to Tell Putin During His Visit to Russia

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine during his planned visit to Russia for the Russia–Africa Summit.

Mahama disclosed this during an interview at the Financial Times Africa Summit in London, where he discussed Russia’s military presence in the Sahel region and the importance of international cooperation in tackling terrorism.

Addressing questions about Russian military units providing support to some governments in the Sahel, the Ghanaian leader maintained that countries should have the freedom to seek security assistance from any partner willing to help combat terrorism.

He pointed to Ghana’s security partnerships with the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States as examples of international cooperation, explaining that these relationships involve intelligence sharing and joint military training.

The President also reaffirmed Ghana’s non-alignment policy, emphasising the country’s commitment to maintaining cordial relations with nations across the world, regardless of their geopolitical differences.

Against this backdrop, Mahama revealed that his upcoming trip to Russia would provide an opportunity to engage Putin on the need to halt the fighting in Ukraine.

He expressed his intention to use the diplomatic engagement to encourage the Russian leader to support a ceasefire, although he did not indicate whether any formal negotiations had been arranged.

The Russia–Ukraine war began in February 2022, when Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of its neighbouring country.

Since then, the conflict has resulted in significant loss of life, widespread destruction of infrastructure and a prolonged humanitarian crisis.

Despite various diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the war, efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire have faced significant obstacles, particularly over disagreements between the two sides regarding the conditions for ending hostilities.
