VP Jane Tells Ghanaians The Truth About Obuasi SHTS Abuse Case

Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has called for the law to take its full course in the ongoing investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai.

The Vice President described the matter as a serious national concern, emphasising that its consequences could affect not only the students allegedly involved but also their future and the wider society.

She made the remarks on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, after returning to Ghana from a working visit to China, during which she attended the Global South Academic Forum in Shanghai.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang said she had been monitoring developments surrounding the case while outside the country and was aware of the public reactions and measures taken in response to the allegations.

She stressed the importance of allowing the appropriate legal processes to proceed, given the gravity of the accusations and the potential implications for the lives of those affected.

According to the Vice President, the matter extends beyond individual concerns and requires the attention of the entire nation.

Her comments come amid growing public pressure for accountability following reports that several female students had allegedly suffered sexual abuse involving the school’s headmaster.

The allegations gained national attention after investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni published a documentary titled Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow, which examined claims of sexual misconduct at the institution.

In response to the controversy, the Ghana Education Service (GES) interdicted Mr Abdulai pending investigations. The Education Ministry also directed the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service to investigate the allegations.

The GES has subsequently directed the Ashanti Regional Director of Education and the Obuasi East Municipal Director of Education to step aside to help ensure that the ongoing investigations proceed without interference or the perception of undue influence.

The case has triggered widespread debate about student protection, institutional accountability and the responsibility of educational authorities to ensure that schools remain safe environments for learning.

The Vice President’s call for due process adds to growing appeals for a thorough investigation and appropriate action based on the available evidence.

The allegations against Mr Abdulai remain subject to the relevant investigative and legal processes, and the outcome will be determined through those procedures.
