Tragic reason Back to the Future star Claudia Wells quit Hollywood and was recast in sequels

She wasn't the only side character to miss out on the sequels

Rewatching the incredible Back to the Future trilogy can be jarring when focusing particularly on the family around Marty McFly.

Marty’s girlfriend Jennifer’s actor Claudia Wells is recast for the sequels and his dad, played by Crispin Glover, has his character brought back with a different actor in prosthetics in a move that led to Glover suing the movie’s producers.

In the case of Glover this is due to contractual disputes and creative disagreements around the film, and the actor continued to be active in Hollywood from the 80s and 90s right through to today.

Wells, meanwhile, quit the film series of her own choice due to a heartbreaking family tragedy, stepping back from Hollywood and acting for a whole decade.

Wells played Marty’s childhood sweetheart Jennifer in the films, with her character going into the future and meeting herself in Back to the Future II.

Despite Back to the Future in theory being a breakout role for Wells, after the first film came out in 1985 she appeared in a couple TV shows in 1986 before disappearing until 2008, appearing in no films or shows for 32 years.

In a 2025 interview with Zane Lamprey however she finally revealed the full story of why she quit Back to the Future, explaining that she was looking after her mother during her ill health before she actually quit acting.

Whilst it was widely reported that this was a sweet story, she explained that it wasn’t this simple. She said: “I was with her long before the movies were being made, she got sick years before that. She and I were ‘psychologically as you’d call it totally intermeshed’ and it was just the two of us.

“She and I were a team, and she was very involved in my life. When she got ill, I felt very responsible for the whole thing and she held me responsible in a deeply uncomfortable way.

“She told me that when she started feeling lumps years earlier and because I hadn’t made her go to the doctor the whole thing was my responsibility. I’ve never said that publicly but it was a really big deal.”

After the movie’s release her mum was diagnosed with cancer. She died in 1994.

Her mother was also an alcoholic, with Wells saying in another interview with CBN: “I thought everyone grew up hearing, 'I regret the day you were ever born.' I really thought that was a normal thing.”

Speaking to Lamprey about rejecting the sequels to care for her mum, she said: “They were willing to wait. They were willing to do whatever it took to have me be Jennifer, and I refused every time.

“My mother had been very, very sick. I was busy at home dealing with the trauma of her dying illness.”

The actor actually doesn’t even consider herself to be an actor, saying: “I always, even as an actress, never considered myself an actress unless I was actively acting.”

She later opened a menswear store and worked there for years, leaving Hollywood behind, but said to Fox News: “I left acting altogether, but I knew I would come back. I never felt it was over. I'm still waiting to come back. I still don't feel like it's over.”

Now she has been steadily working again, appearing in multiple small independent films and one episode of The Mentalist.
