Sakaja Reassigns Geoffrey Mosiria
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has reassigned three county chief officers, and the reshuffle comes just days after one of them openly declared interest in the city’s top seat.
A circular dated October 21, 2026, signed by County Secretary and Head of Public Service Dr. Machel Waikenda, confirmed the changes. They took effect immediately. Among those affected is Geoffrey Mosiria, who served as Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service.
Mosiria had recently told the public he was considering a run for governor in 2027, on condition that he secures the backing of two senior political figures.
He stopped short of announcing his resignation, but he admitted that his time in county government was coming to an end. Those remarks, which signalled a clear break in loyalty, appear to have hastened his exit.
Zipporah Njeri Mwangi will now take over his duties as Acting Chief Officer for Public Participation, Citizen Engagement and Customer Service. She will carry out this work alongside her existing responsibilities for City Culture, Arts and Tourism.
The circular also moved two other senior officials. Eng. Samwel Njogu was reassigned to serve as Acting Chief Officer for Mobility. Godfrey Akumali was shifted to the Housing and Urban Renewal docket and will also act as Chief Officer for Lands.
The Nairobi City County Government did not release a separate public statement with the circular. Dr. Waikenda’s letter only noted that the changes were to take effect upon issuance, leaving the reasons unstated.
Still, the timing has not gone unnoticed. With the 2027 General Election drawing closer, political ambitions inside county offices are becoming harder to hide, and Mosiria’s early declaration appears to have come at a cost.
Whether he now pushes ahead with his governorship plans, and who will back him if he does, is the question many Nairobi residents will be watching closely in the coming weeks.
