UoN Student President Reveals He Spent Over KSh 7 Million to Win Campus Election

A University of Nairobi (UoN) student president has sparked debate online after revealing that he spent more than KSh 7 million to win the institution’s top student leadership position.

In a video shared on TikTok, the student spoke openly about the financial demands of campaigning for the presidency, claiming that winning the seat at UoN requires significantly more money than contesting for similar positions at other universities.

“Spent 7 million Kenya shillings to be elected as the president of the University of Nairobi,” he said, explaining the amount he claimed to have used during his campaign.

The student compared the cost of campaigning at UoN with that of other institutions, claiming that a candidate at a smaller university could spend as little as KSh 50,000 to contest for a student leadership position.

He maintained that the University of Nairobi presidential race was particularly expensive, saying aspirants needed KSh 7 million or more to run successful campaigns.

His disclosure attracted mixed reactions from Kenyans, with some questioning how a university student could raise such a substantial amount of money to pursue a campus leadership position.

One social media user questioned the source of the funds, asking where a student could obtain KSh 7 million for an election campaign.

Another questioned the financial logic of spending millions to secure a position that reportedly pays far less, arguing that the money could instead be invested in a business capable of generating regular income.

However, another commenter suggested that the amount was not unusual in university politics, claiming that campaigning for a student congress position at Egerton University could also cost millions of shillings.

Beyond discussing the cost of his campaign, the student revealed that he had ambitions extending beyond campus leadership. He explained that his ultimate goal was to become a leader in Kenya and enter national politics.

“My dream is to be a leader in Kenya. I want to be in national politics,” he said, suggesting that becoming the UoN student president was an important step towards his broader political ambitions.

The disclosure has renewed questions about the cost of university politics in Kenya, particularly whether the financial demands of campaigning make student leadership positions more accessible to those with substantial financial backing.

However, the KSh 7 million figure remains the student’s own claim, and the report did not provide an independently verified breakdown of the campaign expenditure.
