Report: How Real Madrid Fumbled The Deal to Sign Barcelona Star This Summer

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Wednesday October 21, 2026, Real Madrid reportedly missed the opportunity to sign Rodri after attempting to renegotiate his transfer terms, allowing Barcelona to hijack the deal this summer.

The former Manchester City midfielder had reportedly reached an agreement with the Spanish giants before their late approach changed the course of negotiations. The setback has become more significant as Madrid continue to struggle for stability in midfield this season.

According to reports, Real Madrid were initially in a strong position to secure the services of the Spanish international. Rodri was reportedly prepared to move to the Santiago Bernabeu before Barcelona became involved in the transfer race.

However, the negotiations took an unexpected turn when Madrid attempted to reduce the financial terms of the proposed deal. Juni Calafat, the club’s director of international football and an adviser to Florentino Perez, reportedly pushed for a cheaper agreement.

The decision reportedly frustrated Rodri’s representatives, who were already concerned about how the negotiations had been handled. Questions also emerged about joining a dressing room experiencing uncertainty and adapting to Jose Mourinho after working successfully with Pep Guardiola and Spain coach Luis de la Fuente.

Barcelona quickly recognised an opportunity to secure the midfielder’s signature. Sporting director Deco received approval from Hansi Flick to pursue the deal and immediately began working towards an agreement.

Deco contacted Manchester City, who reportedly agreed to respect Rodri’s decision. Their existing relationship with the club’s sporting director, Hugo Viana, also helped facilitate discussions.

Barcelona then presented Rodri with an ambitious sporting project. Deco promised that the team could improve significantly and compete for the Champions League title.

Flick also spoke directly with the midfielder, while Barcelona’s World Cup-winning players, including Dani Olmo and Lamine Yamal, encouraged him to join them.

The decisive moment reportedly came during a video call involving Joan Laporta, Flick and Deco. Barcelona matched Madrid’s original financial offer, convincing Rodri that he was genuinely wanted. Although Rodri remains grateful for Madrid’s interest, he is now enjoying life in Catalonia.
