Matumbo, head and lower limb meat on high demand as meat prices hit Sh1000 per kg
Kenyans are now shifting to alternative cuts of meat as the price of beef hits Ksh 1000 per kilogram in many parts of the country.
A spot check in markets and butcheries across major towns shows that traditional beef cuts have become unaffordable for many families, forcing them to opt for cheaper options.
Matumbo (tripe), cow head meat, and lower limb meat, commonly known as miguu, are now on high demand as they retail at relatively lower prices compared to prime beef cuts.
Traders in Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa and Kisumu say they have witnessed a sharp increase in customers asking for matumbo and other offals which were previously considered low-value products.
Many butchers reported that they now sell out matumbo and head meat early in the morning, unlike before when customers preferred fillet, steak and other boneless cuts.
The rise in meat prices has been attributed to several factors including prolonged drought in pastoral areas, high cost of animal feeds, increased transportation costs, and reduced livestock supply.
Livestock farmers have also complained about the high cost of maintaining animals, forcing them to increase prices to cover production costs.
For many low-income families, meat is slowly becoming a luxury, with some only affording it once a week or during special occasions.
Some families have resorted to alternative protein sources such as omena, beans, eggs and chicken to cope with the high cost of beef.
Nutritionists warn that while offals like matumbo are nutritious and rich in protein, consumers should ensure they are properly cleaned and cooked to avoid health risks.
Kenyans are now calling on the government to intervene and stabilize meat prices to make the commodity affordable for all.
