Manchester United are reportedly preparing a major defensive rebuild in 2027
According to a report from FootballTransfers, on Wednesday October 21, 2026, Manchester United are reportedly preparing a major defensive rebuild in 2027, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall and Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert among their left-back targets.
According to iNews, club officials accept that the defence should have been strengthened during the 2026 summer window. United signed three midfielders but made no other additions, a decision that drew criticism including from defender Lisandro MartÃnez.
Hall was reportedly high on United’s shortlist last summer, but Newcastle blocked a move.
United are said to remain interested and hope the England international may be open to joining. Truffert is another option, though the France international is attracting competition from other clubs.
The club also intend to sign at least one centre-back, with a second possible. New arrivals could come as early as January if results remain poor, but the scale of the rebuild may depend on departures.
Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and MartÃnez are all approaching the final year of their contracts, although United can extend each deal by a year.
Reports suggest MartÃnez could be given an extension before being sold, with interest from Spain. Shaw may be allowed to leave if he does not accept lower wages, while Maguire is expected to stay.
