List of 7 Counties to Be Linked By New Mega Road Project

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has identified four road corridors totalling 536 kilometres for upgrading to bitumen standards under the proposed Roads for Rural Economic Development Project, estimated to cost USD600 million (KSh77.8 billion).

The Kenyan government intends to seek financing from the World Bank through the International Development Association (IDA), alongside its own contribution.

However, the procurement notices do not state how much the government will put in, nor do they confirm that the World Bank financing has been fully approved.

In an Early Market Engagement Notice, KeNHA said the works will cover parts of Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu, Kericho, Bomet, Nandi, Narok and Nakuru counties.

The corridors are the 110-kilometre Kericho-Kenegut Border Road, the 150-kilometre Kenegut Border-Nyaru Road, the 133-kilometre Neissuit-Embomoss Road and the 143-kilometre Embomoss-Mariwa Road.

Among the areas along the routes are Fort Ternan, Lessos and Kipkabus on the first two roads, while the Neissuit-Embomoss corridor will connect Salgaa, Elburgon and Turi. The Embomoss-Mariwa road will pass through Siongiroi, Kilgoris and Enoosaen.

KeNHA plans to use a design-and-build approach, with works including road upgrading, safety improvements and civil works to accommodate fibre-optic cables.

Each corridor’s road and fibre-optic works are expected to be split into two contracts, creating eight proposed contracts across the four routes.

The wider project also includes bridge construction in the Lower Eastern region, community socio-economic infrastructure and improvements to cross-border trade facilities.

The authority has invited contractors and consultants to give feedback on construction costs, technical requirements, capacity and likely implementation challenges before it finalises its procurement plans.

It added that the procurement strategy and contract packaging could change depending on the views of industry players.
