Kenyans React as Makau Mutua Accuses Sifuna and LSK President Faith Odhiambo of Hypocrisy

Professor Makau Mutua has criticised Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and former Law Society of Kenya president Faith Odhiambo following a political meeting involving Sifuna’s allies and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County.

In a strongly worded statement shared on social media, Mutua accused the two of contradicting their public positions on the rule of law, democracy and human rights by engaging with Gachagua. His remarks came after the Linda Mwananchi team visited Gachagua on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

Mutua Challenges Their Political Position

Mutua’s statement questioned the consistency between the principles Sifuna and Odhiambo have publicly advocated and their decision to participate in the engagement at Wamunyoro.

His criticism adds a new dimension to the political debate surrounding Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi movement as opposition leaders explore possible alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The remarks reflect Mutua’s political assessment of the meeting; they do not, by themselves, establish that either Sifuna or Odhiambo has abandoned their stated principles.

Sifuna Signals More Opposition Engagements

Following the meeting, Sifuna thanked Gachagua and his wife, Pastor Dorcas Gachagua, for hosting the delegation. He described the engagement as the first of potentially several discussions aimed at fostering opposition unity ahead of the next General Election.

Gachagua also said the discussions focused on Kenya’s political future, with opposition figures considering how they might cooperate to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.

However, no formal coalition agreement or joint presidential ticket was announced following the meeting.

Political Alliances Face Growing Scrutiny

The exchange highlights the competing pressures facing opposition figures as they seek to build alliances while maintaining their political identities and public commitments.

For Sifuna and his allies, cooperation with other opposition leaders could shape their electoral strategy. At the same time, critics such as Mutua are questioning whether such engagements are consistent with the principles those leaders have championed.

The debate is likely to continue as political formations position themselves ahead of the August 2027 elections.

Do you think Sifuna’s meeting with Gachagua contradicts the principles he has championed, or is opposition unity necessary ahead of 2027? Share your views in the comments.
