How a Forgotten Meru School Boy Who Topped KCSE Defied All Odds to Become Region’s Only Neurologist
Dr. Paul Bundi Karau—the man who shocked the nation in 2003 by topping the KCSE exams from an obscure village school—has returned home to transform healthcare in the Mt. Kenya region.
Back in 2003, when the late Education Minister Prof. George Saitoti announced the 2002 KCSE results, Kanyakine Boys’ High School in Meru became famous overnight. Dr. Karau, who had previously missed out on top national schools after his KCPE, proved that hard work pays no matter where you start.
After decades of intense study at the University of Nairobi and a prestigious neurology fellowship in India, Dr. Karau returned to Kenya as the country’s 20th neurologist. Today, he is the only brain specialist serving the entire Mt. Kenya and Eastern region, offering much-needed relief to thousands of local families who previously had to travel long distances for specialized care.
“On these sides of Kenya, neurology is almost a rumour,” Dr. Karau shared, reflecting on the huge medical gap in rural communities. Beyond treating patients, the humble doctor and father recently published his book, Escort-In-Chief, reminding young Kenyans that success is an ongoing journey of service rather than a final destination.
