Gerishon Kirima’s widow Teresia warns buyers against purchasing disputed 1,000-acre Njiru land
Gerishon Kirima’s widow, Teresia Wairimu, has warned buyers against purchasing the disputed 1,000-acre Njiru land.
Teresia Wairimu Kirima, who is one of the administrators of the late tycoon’s estate alongside daughter Anne Wangari Kirima, issued a caution amid renewed interest in the prime property in Nairobi’s Eastlands.
The 1,000-acre land in Njiru has been at the center of a long-running court battle pitting the Kirima family against thousands of squatters and self-help groups who claimed ownership through adverse possession.
In October 2023, Environment and Land Court Judge Samson Okong’o ruled that the land belongs to the Kirima family, dismissing claims by three groups including John Otieno Obade group of 300 people claiming 80 acres, Kamatuto Self Help Group of 1,310 people claiming 160 acres, and Naridai Muoroto Self Help Group claiming 501 acres.
The judge declared the occupants as trespassers who entered without legal basis and gave them until December 31, 2023 to vacate or face forceful eviction.
However, the court also recognized about 100 genuine buyers who had receipts from Kirima or Embakasi Ring Road Developers, directing Teresia and Anne to complete their sales within 90 days and issue title deeds.
Teresia’s latest warning comes after reports that some individuals are still selling portions of the land to unsuspecting buyers despite the court ruling.
She maintained that the estate is the rightful owner and that any fresh dealings without the administrators’ consent are invalid and risky.
The Njiru property, which includes a former slaughterhouse complex and vast undeveloped tracts acquired in the 1960s and 70s, has become a multi-billion-shilling land bank due to Nairobi’s expansion.
The Kirima succession case, Succession Cause No. 1298 of 2011, has seen family wrangles since the former Starehe MP and businessman died in 2010 leaving a vast empire of rental houses in Embakasi, Tassia, and commercial buildings in Nairobi.
Buyers have been advised to verify ownership and present original receipts before engaging in any transaction.
