From Nairobi Traffic to a 4pm–Midnight Shift: Meet 32-Year-Old Kenyan with US Job
A 32-year-old Kenyan man has shared how securing a remote job with a company in Chicago, United States, changed his daily routine and improved his work-life balance.
Identified as Jimmy, the man told Business Insider that he works from his home in Nairobi between 4pm and midnight to match his employer’s working hours in Chicago.
He said adjusting to the schedule was difficult during his first month. He initially relied on afternoon naps to remain alert but gradually adapted to the routine.
Jimmy now prioritises eight hours of sleep each night, saying adequate rest helps him remain productive.
His day begins at around 8:30am, when he wakes up, prepares breakfast and reads a self-help book. At 10:30am, he heads to the gym for a workout that includes treadmill exercises, running and training with a coach.
He usually returns home at around 2pm to prepare his main meal. Before starting work, he uses the remaining time to plan his career, reflect on unfinished tasks or relax while listening to music.
During his shift, he keeps his meals light, mainly taking nuts and water.
Jimmy said his current routine is a major improvement from his previous job in Nairobi, where he spent nearly two hours commuting each day.
The long commute and demanding work schedule left him feeling stressed. Working remotely has given him more time to exercise, read and rest.
“When I’m able to incorporate sleeping, reading, working out, and relaxing, I feel like I’m not stressed anymore,” he said.
He added that the improved routine had helped him feel more focused and mentally relaxed.
According to Jimmy, former colleagues have also noticed a change in his appearance, with some saying he looks younger.
His personal life has adjusted to the new schedule as well. His girlfriend works similar hours, allowing them to spend time together on weekends. Friends and relatives also know to contact him between 2pm and 4pm, before his shift begins.
Jimmy expressed gratitude for finding the opportunity, noting that remote jobs remain difficult for many Kenyans to secure.
“In Kenya, it is hard to find a remote job. It’s what so many people would wish to find. I thank God I did,” he said.
