Ebola: FG Finally Breaks Silence, Urges Nigerians To Embrace Self-Care Practices To Contain Outbreak
According to a report by The Daily Post on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, following the confirmation of an imported Ebola virus case in Abuja, the Federal Government has charged Nigerians to embrace personal hygiene and self-care practices to help contain the spread of the disease.
The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, made this call in Abuja during the inaugural National Self-Care Conference 2026, themed “Self-Care Puts Your Health in Your Hands: Test. Track. Thrive.”
Addressing stakeholders, Salako emphasized that individual responsibility plays a major role in controlling infectious diseases.
He urged the public to strictly observe basic hygiene, including regular handwashing and proper disinfection, while cooperating fully with health authorities managing the current Ebola situation.
The minister explained that self-care empowers citizens with the right tools and knowledge to take charge of their health beyond traditional hospital settings.
However, he clarified that self-care complements professional healthcare rather than replacing government responsibilities or substituting clinical services.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the President on Health, Dr. Salma Anas, noted that personal responsibility allows individuals to recognize symptoms and take initial actions at home before visiting medical facilities.
She stressed that the government remains fully committed to expanding universal health coverage without abandoning its duties.
Representatives from the World Health Organization and the Society for Family Health also backed the initiative, noting that self-care interventions like tele-medicine, self-testing, and proper monitoring extend healthcare access to underserved communities across the country.
