Donald Kipkorir Raises Concerns Over Recognition of Legendary Athletes During Mashujaa Day

Senior lawyer Donald Kipkorir has sparked a fresh national debate over the recognition of Kenya’s sporting heroes after questioning the apparent absence of legendary athletes from prominent positions during the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

Kipkorir highlighted Kenya’s outstanding reputation in global athletics, particularly in middle-distance races and marathons, describing Eldoret as the spiritual home of the country’s celebrated running culture.

He expressed disappointment that legendary athletes who helped establish Kenya’s international sporting dominance appeared to have been overlooked during an occasion dedicated to honouring individuals who have contributed to the nation.

Among the prominent sporting figures he mentioned were Paul Tergat, Moses Tanui and Moses Kiptanui. Kipkorir also pointed to Tergat’s influential position within the International Olympic Committee, arguing that athletes of such international standing deserved greater recognition during national celebrations.

The lawyer further questioned the criteria used to award State honours, raising concerns over what he considers an imbalance between the recognition accorded to accomplished sports personalities and other individuals.

He maintained that athletes who have brought international acclaim to Kenya deserve more prominent national honours and ceremonial recognition.

His remarks have resonated with Kenyans who believe that the country’s sporting champions deserve greater appreciation for their contribution to its global identity.

Some recalled the humility of former world champions Daniel Komen and Paul Tergat, while reflecting on personal encounters that demonstrated their character beyond the athletics track.

Others described the celebrations as a missed opportunity to highlight Kenya’s upcoming hosting of the 2029 World Athletics Championships, particularly in the presence of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The debate has reignited calls for a national recognition framework that gives athletes greater prominence, ensuring their sacrifices, achievements and contribution to Kenya’s international reputation receive the honour many believe they deserve.
