Banyana Banyana Head to Morocco With 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Spot at Stake
South Africa’s Banyana Banyana are preparing for a decisive challenge in Morocco as they aim to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Head coach Dr Desiree Ellis and her squad will compete in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Play-off Tournament, scheduled to take place in Rabat from November 28 to December 5, 2026.
According to the South African Football Association (SAFA), six nations will participate in the competition: South Africa, Chinese Taipei, Ecuador, Ghana, Papua New Guinea and Uzbekistan. The tournament will feature nine matches, with only the top two teams progressing to the final stage of qualification in February 2027.
Banyana Banyana will begin their campaign against Chinese Taipei before taking on Ecuador in their next scheduled fixture. Both matches will be crucial as South Africa seek to finish among the two teams that advance to the next round.
Ellis and her technical team will need to ensure that their players are well prepared for the challenge. Maintaining consistency, defensive discipline and effective finishing could prove decisive in a tournament where every result matters.
South Africa will draw confidence from its experience in international women’s football. However, the presence of five other competitive nations means Banyana Banyana cannot afford to underestimate any opponent.
According to the information released by SAFA, three World Cup places remain available through this qualification pathway. Reaching the final round in February would therefore bring South Africa a step closer to securing a place at the global tournament.
The immediate objective for Ellis and her players is to finish in the top two in Rabat and keep their World Cup ambitions alive.
South African supporters will be hoping Banyana Banyana rise to the occasion and take another important step towards Brazil 2027.
