Waiguru Questions Sifuna’s Presidential Bid, Cites Lack of Funds and Political Muscle

Anne Waiguru , the governor of kerinyaga county has cast doubt on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s readiness to run for president in 2027, arguing that he lacks both the financial resources and the ability to rally key allies.

Speaking in a Citizen TV interview, Waiguru pointed to Sifuna’s failure to persuade his closest associates to abandon their parties and join his presidential platform. She contrasted this with President William Ruto’s track record, noting that as deputy president, Ruto successfully mobilised more than 100 members of parliament and built extensive campaign machinery.

“If you don’t have it, what are you doing running for president?” Waiguru asked, referring to the money and organisational capacity required for a viable national campaign. She added that Sifuna still needs more time to develop the political strength necessary to compete effectively.

Sifuna has publicly declared his intention to contest the 2027 election under the Linda Mwananchi movement, formerly The Equitable Party. The Nairobi senator has dismissed concerns about his relatively limited experience and financial base, expressing confidence that public support, opposition unity and divine guidance will propel him to become the first one-term senator to reach State House.

Waiguru, who has indicated she will not seek the presidency in 2027 because she believes she cannot defeat Ruto, maintained that Sifuna has a political future but that 2027 may come too soon. Her remarks form part of a broader debate within Kenyan politics about the opposition’s capacity to field a strong challenger against the incumbent.

The comments come as various opposition figures, including Sifuna, Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i, position themselves ahead of the next general election, with questions of resources, alliances and electability remaining central to the conversation.
